Fade one picture over another?

I'd like to have picture 1 displayed and then picture 2 faded over the picture 1 without picture 1 is fading out. If I use "fade" or "crossfade", there is always a short time when the display gets white (fade) or lighter (crossfade). Is it possible to fade each new picture over the picture displayed before?
