MIT Science Olympiad is committed to protecting the privacy and accuracy of confidential information to the extent possible, subject to provisions of state and federal law. Other than as required by laws that guarantee public access to certain types of information, or in response to subpoenas or other legal instruments that authorize access, personal information is not actively shared. In particular, we do not re-distribute or sell personal information collected on our web servers.
This privacy policy has been compiled to better inform those who are concerned with how their Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is being used online on one of our sites (websites hosted at mit-scioly.org and scioly.mit.edu). PII, as described in US privacy and information security law, is information that can be used on its own or with other information to identify, contact, or locate a single person, or to identify an individual in context. Our privacy policy describes how we collect, use, protect or otherwise handle your Personally Identifiable Information submitted to our website.
Our sites collect the following analytics:

Our sites do not associate this data to individual user identities.
Our sites use “cookies” in order to improve the browsing experience. You can choose to have your computer warn you each time a cookie is being sent, or you can choose to turn off all cookies through your browser settings. Note that disabling cookies may affect site functionality.
Our sites may use webforms forms. These forms require users to give their name, email address, and school. Contact information from the registration form is used only to run the MIT Science Olympiad invitational for which it was collected and will not be sold to or shared with any third party outside of MIT Science Olympiad.
We use Google Analytics to gather statistics for portions of our websites. The information gathered will be used to improve web services for visitors. Google Analytics uses a browser cookie for statistical analysis related to your browsing behavior on these websites. If you choose, you can opt out by turning off cookies in the preferences settings in your browser, or download and install Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. - Our sites will only use personal information collected from this site for the purpose of coordinating the MIT Science Olympiad tournament.
- Our sites use browser-IP-address information to report information about site accesses and for site-maintenance purposes. This information is used to improve Web presentation and utilization. IP address information may also be used for troubleshooting purposes.
- Our sites may use supplied student information to validate and verify competitors who will be participating in our Science Olympiad tournament. This includes verifying competitors’ completion of liability forms to participate in our tournament in accordance with MIT’s minors policy.

CalOPPA is the first state law in the nation to require commercial websites and online services to post a privacy policy. The law’s reach stretches well beyond California to require any person or company in the world that operates websites collecting Personally Identifiable Information from California consumers to post a conspicuous privacy policy on its website stating exactly the information being collected and those individuals or companies with whom it is being shared. According to CalOPPA, we agree to the following: Users can visit our site anonymously. Once this privacy policy is created, we will add a link to it on our home page or as a minimum, on the first significant page after entering our website. Our Privacy Policy link includes the word ‘Privacy’ and can easily be found on the page specified above. You can change your personal information by emailing us or by logging in to your account.
We do not respond to Do Not Track signals.
When it comes to the collection of personal information from children under the age of 13 years old, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) puts parents in control. The Federal Trade Commission, United States’ consumer protection agency, enforces the COPPA Rule, which specifies what operators of commercial websites and online services must do to protect children’s privacy and safety online.
We do not collect information from children under the age of 13. Only coaches should be filling out information, and the information should be about no students below the age of 13.
