Currently running MidnightBSD on an older system which necessitates the 304-series driver. linux-nvidia-libs-304 has a 2.2 version, but not the driver proper. Was support dropped in the 2.2 release?

Not an intentional drop. The last released package build had it fail. It passed on the last amd64 build that wasn't released but failed on i386.
We haven't published a package build on 2.2.x for awhile because there have been some packages that are critical that haven't passed. Initially, we were going to just do the 3.0 release and not bother with that, but as that has been delayed, we've been working on getting a number of critical packages updated and fixed for both 2.2 and 3.0.
You should be able to install linux-nvidia-libs-304 from mports rather than packages to get it. Please let me know if that doesn't work for you.
To figure out what build was published, you can check the "blessed" column for the given OS release and the highest package build id https://www.midnightbsd.org/magus/runs/
