Describe the bug
half-open intervals seem to confuse the syntax highlighting.

square brackets shouldn't really be considered anything special inside text/math mode, same for normal parenthesis not immediately after a function name.

we have no math parser yet so we cannot identify text brackets in math mode. you can workaround it by escaping it \[

math syntax highlighting is hard so we may not start it in recent future.
