Currently, the CONTRIBUTING.md says

> Check that all the tests run

yet there is no description of how to run the tests that I can find.

The CONTRIBUTING.md and the Documentation have been extended to provide details on how to run the tests, thanks for the comment.

I was surprised at how long it takes for the tests to run. In fact I thought that the tests weren't working at all before I looked at what the tests do. Consider adding something about this in the documentation. In addition, it would be great to write unit tests that run faster. These are all nice to have, but closing this as the point of this issue was addressed.
