This came up in the webmonetization coordination call. The hurdle for signing up to Solid + Coil + Uphold + then uploading a photo of your passport for KYC is super high. It would be much nicer if we can first monetise our content using something like Network Money or Federated Bookkeeping, and then later settle to Uphold once the account balance is high enough to be worth going through KYC for.

Renaming this to be more like a problem description and less like a solution description:

Splitting this out becoming a creator, this issue will from now on just be about becoming a consumer.

Currently, you would need:

  • a Coil account
  • a Coil membership
  • a Coil browser extension

We could create an alternative browser extension, but that's a big project.
Another option is if Solid OS would send peer-to-peer IOUs to content creators when Alice views Bob's pod.
So then any Solid OS based app would not require the user to have the browser extension installed.
The money sent would be network credits (IOUs) that you can't cash out without help from the money sender; settling would be manual. We could use the existing code from https://github.com/ledgerloops/snap-solid.
