In the README, it is mentioned to also consider to teach transferring compressed data. Let's vote on this :-)

These are the notes that were suggested:

  • Good to do before transferring
  • (g)zip and tar

I vote to not teach how to compress data. In a remote desktop environment it is all too trivial to compress data; there is nothing to teach.

I vote for
We should not limit people to use remote desktop in my opinion

I think it should be shown and done in exercise. even if it takes just e few minutes
perhaps try an example of transferring a folder with 10 000 files and compare to compress and tar and then transfer!

I think at least mentioning some pros and cons to compression in connection to file transfer would be good. Also mentioning checksums.

Current votes:

  • No exercise, do not mention: Richel
  • No exercise, do mention: Viktor
  • Exercise: Björn

Maybe the limited amount of time in our schedule at #13 gives us insight what we pick here :-)

This is an open issue now. As @bclaremar will be teaching the third hour (for scp and sftp), I feel he can decide if he wants to add it there yes/no.

My opinion is still 'no exercise, do not mention', but I will agree with anything he decides 👍
