Initial map pool proposal

For the Steam release, there will need to be a limited MP map pool. This makes the download from Steam be the complete version for matchmaking, and allows us to realistically polish up the maps that players will generally play, mostly artistically (esp. adding SSMF where absent).

As such, let's work out a map pool for initial release. The idea is that every 3-6 months we can rotate in a few new maps that are competitively viable, and thus rotate out a few of the old ones, which should mean every couple years the map pool is completely different, keeping things fresh but still relatively learnable.

Overall, the pool should be a good representative cross-section of the styles of play Zero-K offers. The maps should allow for a fairly wide range of strategies, so that newer players don't feel like they have to do one very specific thing on each map to win, and thus feel overwhelmed. Also, maps that encourage a lot of turtling (Barren, Dead Lands, Badlands, etc.) should be considered very carefully.

#Initial pool proposal:

##1v1:

  • Barren - small metal light map.
  • Ravaged - solid for all factories, somewhat atypical design.
  • Onyx Cauldron - Another solid for all factories map, Also the prettiest map OR Obsidian when its issues with map get fixed (feature one or another)
  • Titan Duel - good semi-flat map to practice vehicles and importance of corners vs centre OR Red Comet/Red Craters - not sure which one is better but I would say that Titan Duel kinda wins in this situation.
  • Comet Catcher Redux - iconic very macro heavy map OR Hide and Seek - dependent which one will get remade.
  • Intersection - very solid medium sized map with defensive base.
  • Eye of Horus - nice middle ground between the comets.
  • Tartarus - Excellent design, but the lava in the middle will need to change to look more cooled or gain lava features to avoid confusion.
  • Icy Shell - small melee map with heavy inaccessible by vechs center mex, both vechs and bots work here.
  • Avalanche - interesting map design, needs its trees to be remade.
