By replacing the ESP32-WROOM-32 by a ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 or -2 we could get rid of the expensive FT231X plus it has more processing power

That's a great idea, and not to mention the ESP32 itself is getting deprecated.

I have used the ESP32-S3 WROOM in another project and the serial capabilities are great.

If you and/or anyone else would be soon willing to manufacture a new PCB and would like to propose a redesign taking into account the S3, it would be great!
