Pictures widget doesn't show pictures

The pictures widget behaves unexpectedly in that it doesn't actually show images. Firstly, if the chosen directory driving the widget has subdirectories, the names of those subdirectories are shown instead of recursively showing images inside the subdirectories. Then, even if images are in the selected directory, the widget shows the name of the image but not the image itself. The only way to see the image is to activate the widget and hit enter. Is this expected behavior? It seems mostly useless and unexpected for a "Pictures" widget to not show pictures.
