Opportunity:

To get more specific than the numeric field.
To have units built in to the component.
To have a calculation feature for currency conversion or to add up a total.

Risks:

This field should not be used if asking for an estimate (multiselect with range of values or short text field would be better) -- as per Caroline Jarrett – Forms that work
