Have you tried using lxc? Just offering an alternative.

That'd be cool, but I think that should be raised as a seperate ticket, I don't think I have time to experiment when we've got the datapackager build working with vagrant.

This is just an issue to remind me to document a quick we have with the packaging for the datapackager and anyone else who might end up using vagrant + ansible + ckan in the future.
