Special (but valid) UTF-8 characters break links

Typically, this wouldn't be a problem if the link is copied via specific browsers (e.g. Chrome, since it encodes the url to %xx%xx...), but when copying from a text file or other apps, links like:
http://graphemica.com/–
...are not linked correctly:

[lpetrov]

Btw, I'd tested this on:

And also found that i was reported in 2014, but the author closed the issue after opening:
