Are we going to want to use italics in the title of an article, within the article itself?

The answer will almost certainly be yes.

For the stage docx2xml P3-processing will recognise italics and convert to <hi rend="italics"/>.
Before passing the XML across to the UB-XSLT it will be possible to convert to or or possibly another element as required or felt necessary.
