The project crashes QGIS at various points (different places each time you run it).

I am going to rewrite the study_area routine to use pure GDAL as I believe there are some bugs in QGIS causing the crash.

Here is a progress update:

The core work of porting to pure GDAL/OGR is done and it fixes the crash. I am testing on full fiji (it still takes a long time to run) - the above screen shots show the results of the in-progress outputs. After that I will add progress reporting and tests.
