TABLE OF CONTENTS
- Cannot scan with the ADF at resolutions higher than 1200 dpi.
- A printer configuration dialog keeps appearing after every single
scan action.
- Image Scan! does not appear in the GIMP menu.
- Image Scan! is in the GIMP menu but it is disabled.
- Directory contents do not show up correctly in the save dialog.
- Images are a lot smaller than expected.
- Scaling causes Image Scan! to crash.
- The device is recognised as a scanner but I can't scan.
- USB devices are not recognised as scanners.
- Accessing the device via the kernel's scanner module.
- Image Scan! crashes when used with root privileges.
- My distribution doesn't have libltdl3 but Image Scan! requires it.
- Marquee sizes can only be set in multiples of 8 (in rare cases 32).
- I cannot use my device's multi photo feeder (MPF) option.
- I cannot use my device's auto film loader (AFL) option.
- I cannot use my device's transparency unit (TPU) option.
- The document feeder does not transport documents correctly
======================================================================
- Cannot scan with the ADF at resolutions higher than 1200 dpi.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
+ Scanning with the ADF at resolutions higher than 1200 dpi causes
certain devices to lock up.
The following devices are affected:
- Epson Stylus Office BX600FW
- Epson Stylus Office TX600FW
- Epson Stylus SX600FW
- Epson WorkForce 600
If this happens, you will need to restart Image Scan! as well as
the device itself.
This has been fixed in iscan-2.17.0.
======================================================================
- A printer configuration dialog keeps appearing after every single
scan action.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
+ This has been confirmed on FC6 and you can fix the problem with an
upgrade of the 'hal-cups-utils' package. Version 0.6.9-1.fc6 has
been confirmed to solve it.
You will need to configure the printer part of the device to use a
HAL device URI, that is, something that starts with 'hal:///' (of
course without the quotes), via the CUPS web interface or Fedora's
'system-config-printer' utility. If you can configure the printer
via the 'Specify Printer Driver' dialog, that should also work and
is probably easier for most.
======================================================================
- Image Scan! does not appear in the GIMP menu.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
+ Normally, installing a binary package will register iscan as a GIMP
plugin. In case this did not happen, or you compiled and installed
iscan from source, you can register it as a plugin yourself with
the following command:
$ ln -s /usr/bin/iscan ~/.gimp-2.2/plug-ins/
Adjust the version number to match the version of the GIMP that you
use (and /usr/bin to wherever iscan was installed). If you want to
make it available system wide, you can do that with:
# ln -s /usr/bin/iscan `gimptool-2.0 --gimpplugindir`/plug-ins/
If the GIMP complains something like
duplicate plug-in: "/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/iscan"
Just remove ~/.gimp-2.2/plug-ins/iscan and all should be fine.
Note that the system wide location may use a version number that is
different from the one used in your home directory.
======================================================================
- Image Scan! is in the GIMP menu but it is disabled.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
+ This problem has been confirmed on Ubuntu 7.10 and Fedora 8. Both
use a release candidate of GIMP version 2.4, gimp-2.4.0rc3 in case
that matters. We are not quite sure why this happens but the final
2.4.0 GIMP release does not appear to suffer from this problem.
We suggest you upgrade your GIMP packages to 2.4.0 or later.
======================================================================
- Directory contents do not show up correctly in the save dialog.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
+ If you have files or directory names with non-ASCII characters in
them, these may not get displayed at all or displayed incorrectly
in the file selection dialog. Warnings will appear on the terminal
window you started iscan from (or in ~/.xsession-errors if you used
the menu) that look like this:
Gtk-Message: The filename "\343\203\207\343\202\271\343\202\257\343\203\210\343\203\203\343\203\227" couldn't be converted to UTF-8. (try setting the environment variable G_FILENAME_ENCODING): Invalid byte sequence in conversion
You can work around this problem by starting iscan from a terminal
with the following command:
$ G_FILENAME_ENCODING=UTF-8 iscan
======================================================================
- Images are a lot smaller than expected.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
+ For certain devices the resolution is restricted to values not
larger than 600dpi when scanning from the ADF. The resolution lists
do not reflect this restriction.
The following devices are affected:
- Epson ES-H300
- Epson GT-2500
- Epson LP-M5000
- Epson LP-M6000
The resolution lists reflect this restriction as of iscan-2.16.0.
======================================================================
- Scaling causes Image Scan! to crash.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
+ Image Scan! may crash if the combination of scale and resolution
settings result in a scan resolution greater than 600 dpi. This
problem only occurs when scanning in ADF mode.
The following devices are affected:
- Epson LP-M5000
- Epson LP-M6000
If this happens you will need to restart the device.
This has been fixed in iscan-2.17.0.
======================================================================
- The device is recognised as a scanner but I can't scan.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
+ The various GNU/Linux distributions all use different policies when
it comes to accessing scanners. Please refer to the information of
your distribution for the details.
On quite a few distributions you can solve this by adding yourself
to a certain group, often "scanner" or "lp". There is probably a
"Users and Groups" entry somewhere in your menus that let's you do
that. You can also try the command line.
# adduser $user $group
or
# usermod --append --groups $group $user
or
# usermod -A $group $user
Of course, substitute $user and $group with values that match your
situation.
You will have to log out and back in again to make these group
membership changes take effect.
======================================================================
- USB devices are not recognised as scanners.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
+ The Image Scan! binary packages try hard to make sure all supported
devices are properly recognised as scanners. In case yours is not,
Image Scan! will not be able to communicate with it. Should that
happen, try the following:
- replug (or power-cycle) the device
- reload the udev rules with one of
# /etc/init.d/udev reload
# /etc/init.d/udev force-reload
# /etc/init.d/udev restart
If you built Image Scan! from source, you will have to create (and
install) udev rules manually. Have a look at the make-policy-file
script in the source's policy/ directory and how this is used in the
iscan-data.spec and debian/rules files.
======================================================================
- Accessing the device via the kernel's scanner module.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
+ First things first, the kernel's scanner module is no longer part
of the kernel since version 2.6.3 and has not been maintained as of
the late 2.4.x kernels. If at all possible, do not use this module
anymore.
So you really, really want to use the scanner module? Then have a
look at the epkowa.conf file included in the sources (and typically
installed as /etc/sane.d/epkowa.conf). If your system doesn't have
a device node for USB scanners, you can create one with:
# mknod /dev/usb/scanner0 c 180 48
# chmod 0666 /dev/usb/scanner0
Adjust the file name as necessary. You may also want to tweak the
access permissions and ownership and/or group settings for security
reasons. Whatever you use, remember that people who need to access
the scanner will need both read and write permissions to the device
node.
======================================================================
- Image Scan! crashes when used with root privileges.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
+ This may happen with all-in-one devices that have memory card slots.
A slot may be mistaken for a scanner device, triggering the crash.
You really shouldn't be using Image Scan! with root privileges to
begin with, so scan with normal user privileges. Normal users do
not have the privileges needed to mistake the memory card slot for
a scanner ;-)
This has been fixed in iscan-2.15.0.
======================================================================
- My distribution doesn't have libltdl3 but Image Scan! requires it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
+ We first noticed this on Ubuntu 8.10, which switched to libltdl7
completely. Ubuntu users have documented[1] some options.
Alternatively, you can build your own Image Scan! packages against
a newer libltdl version. For instructions on how to do that, see
the README file.

======================================================================
- Marquee sizes can only be set in multiples of 8 (in rare cases 32).
----------------------------------------------------------------------
+ This is a limitation that affects all models.
======================================================================
- I cannot use my device's multi photo feeder (MPF) option.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
+ Image Scan! for Linux does not support the multi photo feeder option.
The following devices are affected: Epson GT-F500, Epson GT-F520,
Epson GT-F550, Epson GT-F570, Epson Perfection 2480 PHOTO,
Epson Perfection 2580 PHOTO, Epson Perfection 3490 PHOTO,
Epson Perfection 3590 PHOTO.
======================================================================
- I cannot use my device's auto film loader (AFL) option.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
+ Image Scan! for Linux does not support the auto film loader option.
This affects the Epson GT-F700 and Epson Perfection V350 PHOTO.
======================================================================
- I cannot use my device's transparency unit (TPU) option.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
+ The following devices only support scanning from the flatbed:
Epson GT-F550, Epson GT-F570, Epson Perfection 2580 PHOTO,
Epson Perfection 3590 PHOTO.
======================================================================
- The document feeder does not transport documents correctly
----------------------------------------------------------------------
+ This may happen when you put your documents in the feeder slot of
the DS-30 before starting a scan. To get document feeding to work
the way it should please do the following:
When using Image Scan! for Linux:
1. Press Image Scan! for Linux' Scan button.
2. Insert your document in the feeder slot. The device will "grab"
the document and pull it in a little.
3. Press the scan button on the device.
When using other SANE frontends:
1. Insert your document in the feeder slot.
2. Start scanning from the frontend.
3. Re-insert your document in the feeder slot. The device will now
"grab" the document and pull it in a little.
4. Press the scan button on the device.
