Product and reference definition

Hello,
After long time testing PIMCore solution, i've had a question about product and reference definition, and solutions to do this.

I've 2 business unit for my customer. And all product can have reference for this 2 business unit.
In the future, customer want to add reference for a new third business unit, for all product.
For this customer, i've product with some datas and i need to create reference of this product. References have got a code number, specific on business unit.
How can i've manage business unit and reference ?

• reference could be variant of product, with property field for code number and an other for business unit (so, manage business unit like select value in property field)
  (in this case, i can't add more field on reference ; it's basic definition of reference variant for product)
• if i want reference like a form (for future evolution and flexibility), with more field different to make variant of product, i manage reference with a new class, and business unit like a field (like classification store for exemple)

What's your opinion ?
