Is it still possible to append to the version when building?

While quasi-undocumented, I used to be able to use QBT_VER_STATUS to change the version.

When I try this now, the build process says QBT_VER_STATUS was "not used by the project".

Is it still possible to append to the version, even if by a different method?

Build steps:

My use-case is building development versions of the backports. For master, the version status defaults to alpha1....for the backport branches, the version status is empty.
