Could you make this work with WMTS? I know that this will not be of much use for eli but neither the less would be of great help.

This is a good suggestion and definitive on the list of things to implement. But as I currently don't have too much time at hand and I first need to gather more knowledge about how exactly the WMTS protocol works and how it is used by OSM editors, so it will probably take some time.
