Changing damage indicators' color and size depending on the value would help a lot. This way, you can roughly know how much damage you inflicted without having to actually read the number. Hitsounds can already be used for this, but hitsounds can't be heard if you play without sound.
For instance, it can be a gradient as follows:
1 damage is small white text.
25 damage is medium yellow text.
75 damage is large red text.
Negative damage values (weapons that heal with custom variables) use green text and have a + prefixed to them.
seconded - after a long time of playing this game it is still incredibly hard to be able to tell whether you are hitting headshots for something like the flamethrower or other big projectile weapons, would love that
