Batocera Lite Beta for RG35XX Plus and RG35XX H - 20240208

[acmeplus]

This is the first Beta image of Batocera Lite for the RG35XX Plus and RG35XX H, most of the functionality is there, but there may be features that are either incomplete or not working as expected.

Important:

• This is a consolidated image for both RG35XX Plus and RG35XX H. You can install and actually swap from one system to another while keeping the same content.
• There are still some performance issues with some cores or standalone emulators with this release, while many are running fine, some others are not there yet. In general the build needs to be updated with optimizations, but there's still work to do.

Installation

New install:

• Flash image to a new sdcard (batocera-h5-rg35xx-plus-39-20240208.img.gz)
• Insert sdcard into the RG35XX Plus/H
• Press power a few seconds to boot (note, if you have a power cable connected the system will enter into charging mode, so press power to display the charge status screen and press power again to continue the boot process)
• NOTE: The first time the system boots it will take a bit longer while the SDCARD is getting expanded and the initial SHARE folder content gets populated

Update from a previous version (2024/01/25 or higher):

• Extract the boot.tar.xz file
• Mount the SDCARD on your computer
• Delete the file boot/batocera from the first partition of the SDCARD (BATOCERA)
• Copy the boot/batocera file from the extracted archive to the boot/ folder of the BATOCERA partition of the SDCARD
• Insert the SDCARD in your RG35XX plus and boot
  IMPORTANT: if you already have content on the SHARE partition, don't copy over the boot/autoresize file to the SDCARD, otherwise you may lose your SHARE content when the card gets updated.

Cores/Emulators Status:

• Working: amstrad, mame, atari2600, atari5200, atari7800, wonderswan color, amiga(uae4arm), c64 (libretro x64), pico8, scummvm (core), colecovision (gearcoleco), vectrex, dosbox, pcengine, pcenginecd, g&w, megacd, nes, gb, snes, gbc, gba, openbor, sg-1000, mastersystem, megadrive, gamegear, spectrum, neogeo, neocd, ngpc, psx, psp, odyssey2, drastic, n64 (.zip with parallel libretro core, z64/n64 with mupen64plus), flycast (standalone and core), msx (fmsx core), x68k
• Ports working (you need your own files): MalditaCastilla, Spelunky, Shovel Knight, VVVVVV, CurseOfIssyos, SpaceCadet Pinball
• Broken: scummvm standalone on the rg35xx plus (unless using an external mouse)

2024/02/08:

• Added charger logic. After a cable is connected to the console the console boots and enters charger mode. To continue boot, press the power key once you see the prompt
• Fixed reboot from EmulationStation menu
• Added initial HDMI support. Connect a HDMI cable and the console will switch to that monitor. Note that if you connect the console while you are playing a game, the audio will continue playing via the internal speakers. However, if you start the game after connecting the HDMI the audio will play from the HDMI TV /Monitor speakers.
• Fixed progress bar issue that briefly overlapped after ES started
• Fixed brightness level not being saved

2024/02/05:

• Fixed bluetooth pairing. Use EmulationStation menu to pair (Main Menu -> Controller & Bluetooth Settings -> Pair Bluetooth Pads Automatically). Many known controllers can be paired with that option, otherwise use the Pair a Bluetooth device manually``
• Added potential fix for compatibility with WPA3 wifi routers (I don't have one, so please check and report back)

2024/01/26:

• Fixed an error with the proper es_input.cfg not containing the RG35XX H analogue input mappings
• Added suspend/resume mode (short press power button).
• Added forced shutdown: press MENU + POWER keys
• Fixed battery charge icon

2024/01/25:

• Consolidated RG35XX Plus and RG35XX H firmware
• Fixed “not connected” network notification (added missing coreutils timeout)
• Fixed issues with some cores not starting (e.g. GBA). This was indirectly caused by the network “not connected” issue
• Fixed retroachievements not being enabled in retroarch after enabled in ES
• Fixed network SHARE issues (BUILDROOT share should be vivible on your network shares once the console is connected to the network)
• Added boot progress bar. Thanks to Rafapardo (spirax_es) who contributed this needed feature
• Added moonlight. Refer to batocera moonlight documentation for setup information
• Added xash3d (Half Life) port. Refer to batocera documentation for setup (Xash3D half flife forums)
• Included VVVVVV data as authorized by Terry Cavanagh (see the original repo from @JohnnyonFlame https://github.com/JohnnyonFlame/VVVVVV/releases/tag/v2.4-r1 with)
• Fixed controller mappings for ports (MalditaCastilla, Shovel Knight, Spelunky, etc). Note that you still need to provide your own port content and copy it over to the corresponding port folder in roms/ports

2024/01/22:

• Fixed shutdown, reboot. Thanks @xonglebongle (adixal) for the hint
• Switched back to GCC compilation, all cores recompiled
• Fixed flycast standalone freezing before game starts
• Fixed Drastic (NDS) not starting
• Added workaround for Drastic control mapping. Add the file es_systems_nds.cfg to [SHARE]/system/configs/emulationstation/. To use the stylus keep pressed R2 to use DPAD for stylus and A to "click".
• Confirmed ADB is working
• Fixed Retroarchievements from EmulationStation (you need to have retroarchievements.org account)
• Fixed scrapers

2024/01/19:

• Fixed SHARE partition automatic expansion for single SDCard configuration
• Change SHARE format to expat
• Added additional card filesystem consistency checks for both internal and external SHARE partitions
• Fixed SSH credentials, use root/linux as default
• Fixed flycast_libretro (dreamcast, Naomi, atomiswave) and made core selection available from emulationstation. If you applied the 2024/01/16 es_system_dreamcast.cfg workaround, remove it.
• Flycast standalone is still broken, once you are in dreamcast, Naomi, or atomiswave section, press SELECT to open the VIEW OPTIONS menu, then go to ADVANCED SYSTEM OPTIONS, and in EMULATOR choose LIBRETRO: FLYCAST
• Initial bluetooth work (still not usable via frontend)
• Added some GLES3 cores/emulators: mupen64plus-next and Yabasanshiro (Saturn).

2024/01/16:

• Fixed audio click noise (not perfect but now very subtle)
• Fixed audio volume controls (volume can be controlled with the keys and is saved during reboots)
• Fixed audio not working on some emulators/cores
• Added brightness controls (level is saved across reboots)
• Added samba support. You can mount the SHARE partition as a network drive

2023/12/20:

• Fixed Overclock settings that were not correctly setup. In EmulationStation, change default setting in emulationstation settings
• mupen64 now working
• Added additional cores (gearcoleco, gem, race, vm, bk, gearbox, meteor, quicknes, cannonball, mame2003-xtreme, crocosd, supafaust, etc.). Note that not all cores are mapped in EmulationStation yet, in some cases you will need to open retroarch, and select the core manually to test.

Things that don't work:

• Some cores/Standalone emulators:
  • e.g. Amiga performance is not there yet
  • DC performance seems worse than stock
• Simplemenu/Koriki is broken in this release, will be fixed with additional features in a future release
• Drastic Settings menu and touchpad emulation is currently broken.

You can't extend the partiton while it's mounted. Easiest and safest would be to put the sd into a reader on your PC and use gparted from a live linux distribution.

3 options:

1. Move the 33.6MB free space behind the primary partition
2. Redo the SD-Card by deleting all partitions and make a single huge one (might be time consuming depending how much stuff you have on it)
3. Wait for @acmeplus to change the logic of the disk check to account for cases like this

Just deleted a bunch of themes, left only 2 essential ones i like to use and man, this thing is flying! :)
The more themes i had installed the slower boot process got.
I dont expect this to be fixed or optimized, I guess it is the way ES works...
I can live with that, I dont need to have 30 themes installed, but this is a good thing to know!

Yeah. As I said before the only router that has wpa3 or mixed wpa2/wpa3 works fine. I suspect there’s some compatibility thing that needs to be added but without proper testing environment there’s not much I can do there.

Looks like you refined the update documentation a bit more. I followed that process and quickly got my RG35XX H running the latest Beta build! Here's what I've tested:

• Boot took about 45 seconds for me, same as older versions. No more weird flashing between the initial boot progress bar and the Batocera progress bar.

• Reboot: works as expected! Progress bar goes from 100% to 0%, system shuts down (green LED turns off), and then comes back on. Note that if the system is plugged into power when you initiate a reboot, then the Charge app launches after the restart.

• Charge app (preboot): working as expected! Displays a battery/charging status for a few seconds then puts the screen to sleep. Tapping the power button wakes up the screen to check the charge level. Pressing power boots Batocera, but only while the screen is awake.

• Bluetooth with PS4 Controller: works as expected! (Thank you!) Once paired, as soon as you turn on the controller it reconnects to the console. Edit: it lost connection and I haven't been able to re-pair it. Still marginally working, though it worked perfectly for a little while.

• Brightness level save: works as expected!

• Volume level save: not working for me.

• I tried HDMI but couldn't get it to work at all. Tried plugging HDMI cable in before boot, while in ES, while in RA: no effect. Edit: problem on my side, working okay now. Problem was a setting on the TV. One minor issue I ran into: the screen resolution for RA seemed to remain in 720p after disconnecting the HDMI and I could only see a corner of the game. I restarted Batocera and it went back to normal. If I can recreate the issue I will take a photo.

I will try to flash the image to a fresh SD card and see if HDMI works better. I'm using a mini-HDMI to HDMI cable plugged into a TV.

Yeah, it's entirely plug and play. Do you get a black screen on the console when you connect the HDMI cable? If that happens, chances are the frequency that is displaying is not compatible with your TV. If the display on the console stays on, then it's a faulty cable or the system does not detect the TV as connected.

Did not find it possible to get vulkan working on ppsspp because it asks for restart immediately after selecting it in settings and when it boots back it is not remembered. Is there any workaround?
Actually, is vulkan even supported? Apparently this mali gpu supports it as it states on ARM's website, batocera also shows vulkan options for some emulators, but does it work? Would like to know

There's no vulkan supported with the current graphics driver. The Vulkan driver is only supported on the 64bit open source driver that we cannot use until the kernel and bootloader are migrated to the kernel mainilne. TLDR; given we don't have access to the current source code, it will take a long time to get there.

My take is you don’t need analogue switching for many games. Just use the PPSSPP control settings and map the analogue to the dpad. Note that the recent versions of stock no longer have that switch capability

No, the charger code is part of a binary that will show that, I'll think about adding customization later on but it's a low priority.

The bezel function works once you connect HDMI. I suspect batocera is auto calculating it does not need bezels for 640x480 resolution and not showing them up. I'll investigate if it's possible to enable it, I know some folks like it for systems like GB/GBC

Great update!

Upgrade went smoothly, tried PSX and it ran well - All was as expected.

However, I tried plugging in the power cable while the PSX game was on pause and I got a bunch of screen artefacts. Screenshot attached. These remained after I disconnected the cable all the way to the shutdown screens. Nice unload sequence!
This is a power supply I use all the time.

Upon reboot, screen was back to normal, so nothing permanent.
Oh yeah, the volume setting doesn't appear to be remembered for me either.

Yeah, that's just a frequency issue, I may need to add a delay before switching the screen back. You can just plug and unplug the hdmi cable again and that should fix that. Still will add some additional delay.

For Dreamcast, make sure you disable DSP in core options and use flycastvl core. If you use flycast standalone, make sure you set auto frame skip to max and DSP disabled. Let me know if that gets you to the same performance as stock.

I tried to launch Crazy Taxi with the LibRetro:FlycastVL core but it just went to a black screen. Running it with the LibRetro:Flycast core with DSP off and auto frame skip to max made the game playable, no more audio skipping.

Yeah, I spent some time trying to understand the problem, but it really comes down to the DSP. Tried VT2 with flycast standalone, and even with DSP off it was slow, but auto frame skip to max brought to full speed and was really playable. Same happened with both flycastvl and flycast.

when finished charging, i disconnected the cable, but the preboot charging screen is still there after a short press on power button, device is not shut down completely after the charger is unplugged.
When press and hold pwr button it blinks the screen and does not boot up. the only way to get out is to hold for a longer time and force shutdown

About removing the cable, yes, I need to add that capability. There are too many cases and that one has not been implemented yet.

I've read all of the responses and done everything that the OP did and I'm still having issues with getting a white screen (even with Shadow of the Beast & R-Type). Any other suggestions for making PC Engine CD work? I don't have any other issues with other systems/cores.

So I've figured out how to fix the drastic menu. The default config for the main controls has a plethora of incorrect settings Formatted on the side, to get to the menu I pushed in R-stick, after that, I continued to press B to scroll down, and after that, L1 to select control options. Then i pressed A to get to the Options on the side and pressed R1 to un-map those. To scroll Down to unmap the rest of them continue to press B **After I did that, I went to extra controls by Pressing B until I scrolled down to Extra's, and then pressing L1 to Select the option. If you press Extra's and you are on the Right control options, Press B to scroll and unmap everything, after you do that you can go over by pressing A and unmapping the settings in the middle, vice versa. This step is REALLY IMPORTANT. Go over to the left by pressing A again, If your already on the left GREAT! Press B to scroll and Only map theese settings to what you would like and ONLY THEESE!

Enter Menu (Function Key Prefered)

Swap Screens (Push In L Stick Prefered)

Swap Screen Orientation A (L2 Prefered)

Swap Screen Orientation B (R2 Prefered)

Menu Cursor Up, Down, Left & Right. (R Stick Movement Prefered)

And last, but not least,

Everything not in the extras Menu You just have to unmap everything on the side like I said earlier. If you wanna change thoose controls do that on your own accord. I don't know how anyone wants their cursor setup so just lmk if you want me to give you a tutorial on that.

Batocera does not really use that file directly. It uses evmapy and a configuration generator to create that file dynamically based on the console dontrols. I need to modify that generator so it creates the mappings correctly. In the meantime I’ll post a workaround.

I installed it but I feel like I need a user guide lol I was comfortable with stock os.. but for example the psx emulator is missing. The function button is no longer operational.. I'm sure this will end up being better but a few things that are immediately of concern are those two features..I'll try to find more info

Function button works though, as well as psx. You might be missing bios files which are needed for the system in question.

As for user guide, since this is based on linux OS, their guide can be used, it is super in depth.

It says bios is missing, i redownload bios and install in the bios location... still doesnt work,, this shouldnt be that complex.

Where are you getting the bios files from?

Search for minicake bios full pack on google, download v39. Replace all the bios files you have.

Use an adblocker though, that site is spammy

Is there a pad2key option here or any another roundabout to play solarus games besides plugging external keyboard? Because some of the default button keymaps on rg35xx+ don't match on in-game used buttons.

Thanks so much for this release! So far everything is working flawlessly for me. Not sure if it's a bug or by design, but when the device goes into sleep, scraping pauses. Then scraping resumes when back out of sleep. Would be great if it could keep scraping during sleep so I didn't have to keep the screen on the entire time. Thanks!

Has anyone got the Network Share working? Seems like the sharewait command doesnt do anything as batocera boots up just as fast no matter what i change this too. Also it seems like batocera-boot.conf is getting corrupt over and over. Ive tried two different SD cards and two different SD readers. Not sure if Batocera is shutting down properly?
