Select for an ENUM field doesn't work if items contain certain characters

The ENUM strings for the field are are: 'new','open','fixed','deferred','closed (other)'

When I create a new record by clicking on the new record button in my (stock) xataface application, the field has a select that has only one (unselectable) item, "Please select...".

If I change 'closed (other)' to 'close' in the ENUM definition, the select is populated as one would expect with the ENUM's strings.

I am also noticing that the field is not getting the value that is set as the default 'new'
