Curious the word "automatically", perhaps it indicates a form of "auto-mechanization" ? Just thinking out loud.

Yep, I think there's definitely something there. Mechanism does seem to necessarily imply the kind of relations that we typically attribute to automation. Especially when we think of mechanism in terms of human and political relations, the fact that everyone is treated the same (the way an assembly line just produces the same object over and over again).
