Are product variants auto generated based on on product variant options?

So you have to make all the different option individually s, m, l - size , blue , red - color

s-red, m-red, l-red
s-blue, m-blue, l-blue would not be generated by the backend admin app, the admin ui would alow for it to be done one combination at a time…

you are the right current version of admin ui only supports one product linking, i've created a issue for this adjustment #623 thank you.
Meanwhile, you can use the graphql playground to call it Mutation.addProductAssignment mutation to link multiple product

Just to clarify:
First you need a "configurable product", then you'd need to define two variations "color" and "size":

Next you link the variants (each of the variants is a first class product, so you need to add those first, then link em via "assignments":

Are you asking for a function to create missing variants from that assignment screen? So basically copy over text and media data to a new SimpleProduct and directly link it as variant?

I think this should not work automatically out of the box because we can't assume the title from the variant values and we don't know how the variants differ in the real world and what consequences it may have on the way you structure the data and use media.

That's why we chose to keep it that flexible, thinking through some cases:

• sometimes some variants have different media but share some with other variants, for example those could have different media images than the base product because you want to show an image of an actual blue shirt when you show some kind of selection or cart summary. On the other hand, blue shirts with different sizes share the same images...
• it's propably wrong to show a big red shirt as a generic Shirt, Big, Red as you might want to show the variant's title as Red Shirt (Big) because you think the color is the primary thing you do select up-front in the UI and not the size... that could be different for other articles
• A "red" classified article could have a title of "Vintage Car, Burgundy-Red"

But I think an Admin UI feature to scaffold the variants (and then manually adjust) could be worth a new feature!
