Workfiles: ability to show human facing error

Please describe the feature you have in mind and explain what the current shortcomings are?

We need a way how to show artist friendly error when some operation cannot be done.

User story:

In Mocha Pro, you cannot save the project without having existing one. When the application is started, it is empty and so clicking to save project can't do anything because the project must be created first. This cannot be done automatically as it needs some input (clip path provided).

How would you imagine the implementation of the feature?

The story above can be addressed either via ability to disable the save button based on some host state, or leave it as it is, but show user facing dialog window warning him that he needs to create the project first.
