Importing

To start using TranslaTale, you first have to extract the strings from UNDERTALE and import them. TranslaTale already has this feature built in, so you don't need to download any additional software. Before you start, locate the installation folder of UNDERTALE. If you've installed it using Steam, the folder is probably at C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Undertale. There should be a data.win file in there, you should probably back it up now, because you'll be replacing it later with the translations.

Location

To extract the strings from this file, in TranslaTale go to Tools>Dump Strings.txt and locate the data.win file. This action doesn't change anything in the data.win file, so you can use the backup file here.

Dump

Now you have to save the extracted .txt somewhere, it doesn't matter where. Make a copy of this file, so there is an original (which will be used as a reference) and a copy (that you'll be saving your translations into).

Translation

Use the Tools>Dump Images option and select the same data.win to extract the images. The textures also have text in them that needs to be translated, for example the "REALLY NOT FEELIN UP TO IT RIGHT NOW. SORRY." texture. Save the images in a separate folder, it will make exporting easier.

Editing

Using TranslaTale is really easy and intuitive. To open a project, go to File>Open. When it says "Open base file" in the window title, open the strings.txt file that you extracted in the previous tutorial. For the "Open translation file", open the copy of strings.txt, you will be saving your translations into this one, the other file will stay the same. With your project open (it should take a second to open it), you can start translating. The red lines have not yet been translated. Select a line and start typing into the text box in the middle-bottom. As you can see, the preview updates as you type. You can add a face to the preview or change the font to see exactly how the text would look like in the game. When a line has been translated, it turns green. The status indicator on the bottom tells you how many lines have been translated and how many are not.

Search

TranslaTale has a search box built in, so you can easily find text in the base file, in your translation, or both. Just click on the Search icon in the toolbar.

Bookmarks

You can insert a bookmark at any line to save your position with the Bookmarks>Add bookmark option. If you come back next time, you can just go to Bookmarks>List bookmarks, and resume from where you left off.

Exporting

You'll need:

  • your Undertale data.win file
  • UTFonts.win (follow this tutorial for more information)
  • Your GFX folder (just unpack the sprites into a folder)
  • Your strings file

Click on Tools > Gliph/Project repack, set the corresponding files-folders and press "save". Done!
