Distributions

A lot of "gaming distros" don't really offer anything special. Here are some that truly do.

  • CachyOS - A performance-oriented Linux distribution based on Arch Linux. Comes with numerous optimizations for gaming and general use, as well as a custom kernel, and tools to tweak it. It comes with less preinstalled software than other distributions; however it does have some basic utilities (CachyOS Hello, Kernel Manager) and it is very customizable.
  • Bazzite - An immutable Linux distribution based on Fedora Silverblue/UBLUE for gaming. Preconfigured for gaming with very little setup involved, and the great stability of Fedora Silverblue.
  • Nobara Linux - A gaming distribution based on Fedora. Comes with some useful kernel tweaks, and lots of great in-house utility programs. It is made by the creator of Proton-GE himself, GloriousEggroll.
  • Garuda Linux - A preconfigured Arch Linux distribution for gaming. Comes with a lot of preinstalled software, out-of-the-box theming, in-house utility programs, and tools for gaming and general use.

Launchers

Here are some great additional game launchers outside of steam

  • Lutris - An open-source gaming platform for Linux. It installs and launches games so you can start playing without the hassle of setting up your games. Get your games from GOG, Steam, Battle.net, Origin, Uplay and many other sources running on any Linux powered gaming machine.
  • Heroic Games Launcher - An open-source Epic Games Launcher for Linux. It allows you to install and run games from the Epic Games Store on Linux.
  • Bottles - Easily run Windows software on Linux with Bottles!

Tools

Gaming tools to enhance your experience

  • ProtonDB - A database of games that work with Proton, a compatibility layer for running Windows games on Linux. It provides user reviews and reports on how well games work with Proton.
  • AreWeAnticheatYet - A website that tracks the status of anti-cheat software compatibility with Wine/Proton. It provides information on which games are unplayable due to anti-cheat software.
  • Proton-GE - A custom version of Proton with various patches and optimizations for gaming. It is known for providing better performance in some games than the official Proton version.
  • ProtonUp-QT - A GUI tool using QT for managing Proton-GE and other custom Proton versions. It allows you to easily install, update, and remove custom Proton versions.
  • ProtonPlus - A GUI tool for using GTK managing Proton-GE and other custom Proton versions. It allows you to easily install, update, and remove custom Proton versions. Offers more features than ProtonUp-QT.
