# About Me

Hello there, welcome to my page UwU!
Hello there, welcome to my page!

> ^Me with some goldenrods and a gall housing the parasitic goldenrod gall fly, *Eurosta solidaginis*.
My name is Yiran and I'm currently a master's student at the University of Toronto, [Department of Molecular Genetics](https://moleculargenetics.utoronto.ca/).
I'm Yiran, a PhD student from the [Awadalla Lab](https://pawadallalab.org/), in [Molecular Genetics](https://moleculargenetics.utoronto.ca/), at the [University of Toronto](https://www.utoronto.ca/).

I do computational work, mostly on bioinformatics/biostatistics. I'm still doing my rotations at UofT MoGen (i.e., working on miniprojects with temporary supervisors) so I don't yet know what my thesis project would be, but in my undergrad, I've played with birds' range expansion and [viruses' evolution](https://filogeneti.ca/covizu/). Both were tons of fun!
I do computational biology. What (I believe) this means is that I write code, build models, and fit those models to biological data, trying to dig insights hidden in the biology. The data that I have worked with include [developmental images of human kidney organoids that are exposed to heavy metal](https://www.deriveresearch.ca/), [observation records of non-native birds in North America](https://academic.oup.com/condor/article-abstract/126/1/duad052/7286365), and pathology slides of ovarian cancer.

Outside of school, I'm a trivia collector, a book lover, and a (beginner level) Klingon speaker. Pretty random right?

Wanna know something even more random? Here's some of my trivia collection:

- The number of segments inside a mangosteen equals the number of petals on its bottom \[1\]
- Cattles don't have teeth at the front of their upper jaws \[2\]
- Extra nipples are common, and yes they can milk \[3\]
I find nature fascinating, and I think with a bit more help on data analysis and machine learning, we can reveal much more of its secrets much easier.

Outside of school, I read (probably too many) books, listen to musicals (mostly on Spotify because I usually can't afford the tickets), and chill with my two Guinea pigs.

**!!! DO NOT SCROLL DOWN IF YOU HAVE FEAR OF RODENTS !!!**
