I have always been disappointed that SharePoint does not provide an underlying technology for deciding if a SharePoint item has been read by the current user. To fill that need, this project is a SharePoint supporting technology to provide visual indicators in a standard SharePoint views view for whether or not the current user has read a specific item or discussion thread.

While SharePoint has the “New” indicator for content on a site, in general it is difficult for users to identify which content they have already read. This is especially true for large document libraries. This technology makes it easier for users to leverage SharePoint content by identifying individual items or discussion threads that they have not previously read; which streamlines the use of SharePoint for research and collaboration

Given a document library or a list or even a discussion thread, a user will see content with visual inline clues as to whether or not they have read it. This is distinctly different than email alerts or notifications in that the content a user should be interested in is immediately visible to them.

By way of example, In a collaboration scenario, a work paper that is shared can be seen as updated or “unread” when others save their changes. No need to wait for email alerts, and no need to navigate the document library for specific versions.

Another example using a discussion thread as a collaboration tool, it is often necessary to navigate large histories to find relevant new items. In this case threads (i.e. folder trees) and individual items can provide easy navigation clues
